Name of suspect in politically motivated Hancock crimes released

HANCOCK, MI— Hancock City Police have released the name of the suspect who ran over an 80-year-old man with an ATV and later killed himself.

Joshua Kemppainen, 22, of Quincy Township was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday at his residence. He had told police he was to blame for vandalizing cars that had stickers supporting Donald Trump or law enforcement. Kemppainen also admitted to running over the elderly Hancock man, who was replacing a Trump sign in his yard.

The Hancock man was released from the hospital Wednesday evening and is recovering at home.

Officials say Kemppainen had no prior contact with local law enforcement.

Assisting in the investigation were the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Houghton City Police, Michigan State Police, and FBI from the Marquette Field Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
