Marquette Police arrest man for home invasion, felonious assault

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette man has been arrested for breaking into a house and assaulting one of the residents with a handgun.

City Police were dispatched Saturday around 5:19 a.m. to a home on the 2000 block of Van Evera Avenue for a reported assault.

Investigation led to the arrest of River-Jordan Shumate, 24, of Marquette, on charges of 1st degree home invasion, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of felony firearms, and possession of cocaine.

Police say the weapon wasn’t fired, but used to strike the victim several times. The victim had multiple lacerations to his face and neck and was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

Shumate remains lodged in the Marquette County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for August 22 and a preliminary exam for August 28 in Marquette County Circuit Court.

Assisting in the incident were the Michigan State Police, NMU Police Department, Marquette Fire Department, and UPHS EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
