New scam in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain Post want to make people aware of the newest scam making the rounds.

Troopers say postcards are being sent to residents. The card says an event touting the benefits of emergency transportation coverage is being held at a local pizzeria. It tells the resident seating is limited and they should call the restaurant to confirm their reservation. The local pizzeria ends up having no seating and the parties realize they’ve been scammed.

State Police say to avoid becoming a scam victim, don’t give personal information to unknown callers; do not respond to unsolicited emails from unknown senders; confirm the identity of a contact by independently calling the agency they’re supposed to be from; use a reliable source, like a phone book, to confirm a contact’s phone number; and report any suspicious contacts to police.
