Spoofers pretending to be deputies in Marquette County

MARQUETTE, MI— Telephone scammers are posing as staff from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Office has received several complaints that people are spoofing the correct phone number. Residents say the caller advises them there’s a warrant out for their arrest or they failed to report for jury duty. Sometimes the caller directs the resident to a certain website for more information.

The calls are coming in as a valid telephone number and often names of current or retired officers are being used.

Officials say the Sheriff's Office will not request personal information from you over the telephone or direct you to any website. Always use extreme caution in paying someone over the phone, especially if you receive such a call.

If you ever doubt the legitimacy of someone you are talking with, even if the caller ID is correct, always look up the phone number independently and call that number to verify the personnel.
