Man and woman who extorted Ishpeming resident jailed

ISHPEMING, MI— Two people were arrested last week for extorting an Ishpeming resident.

City Police say they received a complaint Thursday from a resident who said they received a call from someone identifying themselves as a federal officer. The suspect said the resident was under investigation for Social Security fraud and demanded a large amount of money. The resident paid the scammer. The suspect called again the next day, asking for more money.

Ishpeming officers set up a sting operation on Thursday to catch the scammer, but it was unsuccessful. They tried again on Friday and ultimately arrested a man and a woman who were trying to collect the money.

The pair are lodged in the Marquette County Jail for false pretenses—$20,000 or more but less than $50,000.

Assisting in the case were UPSET, Michigan State Police, and UPHS-EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
