Manistique schools deal with social media threat

MANISTIQUE, MI— Police are investigating a threat made against Manistique Area Schools.

Superintendent Kristina Hansen says Tuesday evening, a social media post began circulating on Facebook and SnapChat regarding a rumor about an act of school violence. The Manistique Public Safety Department, school resource officer, and school officials immediately began to investigate the source of the post.

The investigation determined there was no credible threat against any of the schools.

Police say the original text was sent using a spoofing application. That creates a fake email or phone number to make it look like the message is from a trusted source.

Superintendent Hansen is urging people to report such messages instead of reposting. Reporting allows officials to investigate and act appropriately on the information. She says reposting causes undue panic and fear.

Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased presence of Manistique Public Safety officers in area schools over the next few days.
