Card skimmer found on Marquette gas pump

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Police Department has received a report that a skimming device was found attached to a gas pump at a local business.

Skimmers are used to collect card information, which can then be used to make unauthorized transactions.

Police are reminding citizens to be aware of potential skimming devices that could be attached to gas pumps and ATMs. They’re offering tips to keep your information safe when using a card reader. First, visually inspect the reader and keypad for any signs of tampering; look for loose or misaligned parts; check tamper features such as tape or seals, which may be broken; compare the look of the card reader to others in the area, as in gas pumps; and look for a keypad overlay. The keypad may feel flimsy.

If you suspect a skimmer may be attached to a card reader, do not use it and notify the business immediately so the reader can be inspected.
