NEGAUNEE, MI— A threat of a school shooting in Negaunee has been deemed non-credible.
Wednesday at 6:30 a.m., the Negaunee City Police Department received information from the FBI Detroit Field Office that a 15-year-old Negaunee girl had made the threat. It was reportedly made on Snapchat and was flagged for its content.
Negaunee Public Schools Superintendent Dan Skewis was immediately notified and safety protocols were implemented.
Negaunee Police made contact with the suspect and her father. The teen admitted to making the threat, but claimed it was only a joke. Her father confirmed the 15-year-old has neither the ability nor the means to carry out the threat.
Officers learned while the suspect lives in Negaunee, she is not a student in the Negaunee school district, but attends middle school in a neighboring district. That district’s police department was immediately notified of the complaint and officers there enacted their own safety protocols.
Officials say no credible threat has been established and there is no danger to the public.
The threat of committing an act of violence against a school, its employees or students is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine.
The incident has been forwarded to the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
