ST. IGNACE, MI— A Northville man is charged with three felonies, after he crashed through a toll gate at the Mackinac Bridge and tried to carjack another vehicle in St. Ignace.
Monday around 2:10 p.m., the St. Ignace Police Department and other Mackinac County law enforcement were informed the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a vehicle heading northbound on the bridge.
The male driver crashed through the gate arm at the toll booth and continued towards St. Ignace in the southbound lane of I-75.
Law enforcement briefly lost sight of the vehicle at that time.
Officials say the vehicle entered St. Ignace and became disabled near the entrance of Mackinac Straits Hospital. The suspect then tried to carjack another vehicle containing a woman and her child. The woman was able to drive away with the man clinging to the outside of her vehicle until he fell off.
A St. Ignace Police officer and Michigan State Police trooper found the suspect on foot in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn. They tried to take him into custody, but the man violently resisted arrest. He was eventually arrested with the help of a Mackinac County deputy and Sault Tribal Police officer.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jack Maibach of Northville, was lodged in the Mackinac County Jail. He’s charged with fleeing and eluding, carjacking, and resisting and obstructing an officer.
