Marquette officer injured in armed robbery incident

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette Police Department has yet to identify the armed robbery suspect who punched an officer in the face on Friday.

Officers responded just before 2 a.m. to the Midjim Convenience Store on the corner of Third Street and Fair Avenue on a report a man had robbed the store while armed with a baseball bat.

Responding officers found the suspect still holding the bat outside the store. He initially began to follow their commands and put the bat down. Officers approached the man and moments later he ran. When police caught the suspect following a short foot chase, the man punched an officer in the face, inuring him.

The officer was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of his injuries and released. The suspect was also evaluated, then lodged in the Marquette County Jail.

The suspect—a 40-year-old Ishpeming man—was arrested for armed robbery, four counts of resisting/obstructing a police officer, one count of resisting/obstructing a police officer, causing injury, and third-degree retail fraud.

Assisting in the incident were the Northern Michigan University Police Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette City Fire Department and UPHS-Marquette EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
