SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A 32-year-old man was arrested Friday after he reportedly stole a vehicle from Sault Ste. Marie and led police on a chase reaching speeds of 124 mph.
Central Dispatch advised law enforcement the suspect was wanted for strong-arm robbery and unlawfully driving away an automobile. Evidence at the scene suggested he might have been armed with an assault rifle and might have been experiencing some type of mental episode.
The suspect vehicle was later located in the Rudyard area. When Chippewa County Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop it, the vehicle took off.
Two sheriff’s patrol units pursued the suspect from Chippewa into Mackinac County, where multiple agencies assisted. The suspect reached speeds of 124 mph on I-75.
The pursuit lasted well over 70 miles. Due to the immediate danger to himself and the public, the pursuit continued and the suspect was ultimately arrested in the St. Ignace area.
Police took Andrew Bryant Burnett, 32, into custody and lodged him at the Chippewa County Correctional Facility.
Assisting in the incident were the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, Bay Mills Police Department, Sault Tribe Police Department, Michigan State Police, and St. Ignace Police Department.
