Former NMU adjunct prof headed to trial for throwing coffee on campus Turning Point president

MARQUETTE, MI— A jury trial is scheduled next month for a former NMU adjunct professor accused of throwing iced coffee into another man’s face in April.

Andrew Shirtz, 34, worked in the computer science department. He's charged with one count of assault and battery.

On April 2, Evan Reister, NMU’s Turning Point USA president, had set up a table in Jamrich Hall for a free speech event when Shirtz approached him. Witnesses and video footage indicate Shirtz said, “Why is it called do not comply if your party is in control?” He allegedly threw iced coffee on Reister and walked away.

NMU Police investigated the incident. Shirtz’ employment was terminated immediately after the event.

A final pretrial conference is set for November 10 and a jury trial for November 18 in Marquette County District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
