MARQUETTE, MI— The NMU Police Department is warning students about protecting their drinks, after five people recently said an unknown drug was possibly added to their beverages.
In an email to campus Thursday, police said reports to university officials indicated the incidences happened at parties or local bars. Two of the incidences happened off-campus—possibly at a bonfire party in the woods—in the past two weeks, two possibly occurred at a downtown Marquette bar on Oct. 11, and one was at an unknown location within the past two weeks.
In each case, the victims experienced symptoms consistent with ingesting substances such as Rohypnol, also known as "roofies”. The substance is also called a “date rape drug.”
The incidents were not reported to the police and are not being investigated at this time.
Police say reduce the possibility of becoming a victim, never put your drink down or let it out of your sight, don’t accept an open drink from anyone, avoid punch bowls, and make a pact with your friends to watch out for each other.
Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call NMUPD at 906-227-2151.
