BESSEMER, MI— The Bessemer Area School District was closed on Monday due to a bomb threat.
In a Facebook message to parents, students, and staff, Superintendent Richard Matrella said Sunday around 7:05 p.m., the high school principal received a voice mail indicating bombs had been placed at the high school, but no specific location was given.
The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police responded, secured the campus, and conducted a room-by-room search. An MSP Explosive Detection Canine was deployed Monday around 8 a.m. It cleared both buildings.
At approximately 10:15 a.m., law enforcement determined both the A.D. Johnston and Washington School buildings and campuses were safe; however, out of an abundance of caution, officials decided to cancel all after-school activities and practices.
Classes will resume on Tuesday, but there will be an increased law enforcement presence in and around the schools.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office at 906-667-0203.
