Charges in Delta County animal neglect case to be evaluated

ESCANABA, MI— The Delta County Prosecutor’s Office is considering charges in a Cornell Township animal neglect case.

On February 4, Michigan State Police executed search warrants at a property and found multiple dead and malnourished animals. One person was arrested for biting a trooper.

Prosecutor Lauren Wickman says her office needs to wait until the MSP concludes its investigation before any charges can be considered in the neglect case. She adds a review of the case will be done as quickly as possible upon receiving the reports.

Wickman says her office is aware than animal cruelty charges involving a pony at the property were previously brought against an individual, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development was also involved in matters of animal mistreatment as recently as last October. MDARD issued corrective action, which was taken and documented. Wickman says that hampered her ability to pursue criminal charges.

The prosecutor says there are a multitude of factors that play a role in deciding if and what to charge.
