NEWBERRY, MI— Two Kalamazoo men and a juvenile from Battle Creek have been arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into the Newberry Correctional Facility.
On Saturday, prison staff notified troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post of a possible smuggling attempt. Troopers set up surveillance and saw a vehicle and individuals acting suspiciously near the facility. Police conducted a traffic stop shortly afterwards.
During the investigation, staff found a package in the prison yard containing around 100 grams of meth and four ounces of THC wax.
Two men and a 16-year-old boy were arrested. Trayvonte Brown, 27, and Daquarius Turner, 32, are both charged with delivery/manufacture of meth, delivery/manufacture of marijuana, bringing contraband into a prison, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The juvenile was apprehended on charges of smuggling contraband into a prison, possession with intent to deliver meth, and possession with intent to deliver THC. No further Identifying information about the boy is being provided due to his age.
Brown and Turner remain lodged in the Luce County Jail.
Assisting troopers in the incident were the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, the Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and staff from the Newberry Correctional Facility.
