Domestic violence investigation leads to child abuse and animal neglect arrests in Ishpeming

News release

ISHPEMING, MI— Two Ishpeming residents have been arrested on child and animal abuse charges.

Tuesday around 8:10 p.m., Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post responded to a report of domestic violence at an Ishpeming Township residence. The suspect had left the residence by the time they arrived.

Troopers located him at his Ishpeming home and executed a search warrant. Inside, police found two young children, 16 bloodhounds, and one cat. The residence contained extensive urine and feces, and troopers determined the children and animals were living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

A male suspect was arrested for domestic violence, aggravated domestic violence, 2nd-degree child abuse, and animal abuse/neglect. A woman who lived at the home was arrested for 2nd-degree child abuse and animal abuse/neglect.

The children were placed with a relative while Child Protective Services completes its investigation.

The dogs and cat were taken to UPAWS, where they will be evaluated and cared for. As a result, the shelter is at capacity and temporarily unable to accept owner surrenders or stray dogs until further notice.
