Michigan unemployment workers to be laid off

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The state of Michigan says it will lay off as many as 400 unemployment insurance workers as the economy improves.

The Detroit Free Press reports that all 179 temporary employees will lose their jobs August 31 and up to 225 regular employees will be laid off September 28.  The state attributes the cuts to decreased federal funding as caseloads have been cut in half since 2009.

The state now has about 1,200 unemployment insurance workers.  That includes the temporary workers hired to deal with large caseloads during the recession.

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs says it doesn't expect to close any unemployment insurance offices.
