Marquette Township honored for economic growth

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A downstate research group has recognized Marquette Township for its work to foster entrepreneurial growth and economic development.

ILabs, the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Center for Innovation Research, designated the township a Five-Star Community.

Township Supervisor Dennis Liimatta points to the area’s focus on enhancing economic growth and job development during the recession; access to world-class recreational opportunities; support of smart growth principles; maintaining a low tax rate; and access to health care and higher education opportunities.  He says all those reasons let people work where they live, rather than live where they work.

The cities of Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie were given Four Stars.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
