Former Air Force Base buildings being demolished

WLUC-TV

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, MI (AP)--   Thirty-six structures at the long-shuttered K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base are coming down over the next three months with help from a state anti-blight program.

WLUC-TV reports that crews will demolish 15 buildings and 21 garages at the site in Forsyth Township.

The Air Force closed down the base 18 years ago.

The demolition is being funded through the Michigan Blight Elimination Program, which is providing $480,000.

Sawyer Community Alliance Director Bob Struck says removing the buildings is a high priority for his group as it seeks to improve the area around the base.

There's no immediate plan for how the site will be used.
