DETROIT, MI (AP)-- State-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr has instituted 10 percent pay cuts for about 1,200 police lieutenants and sergeants and about 400 members of the Detroit Fire Fighters Association.
Orr spokesman Bill Nowling says the cuts are the same imposed last year on other city employees, but they were challenged by police and firefighter unions.
Nowling says Orr's office "told them over a month ago" that the cuts were coming.
Accrued sick time also has been capped. Changes also were made to how police will be paid for time spent in court.
Mayor Dave Bing originally initiated the pay cuts as he tried to reduce spending while trimming away at a $300 million budget deficit.
Orr was hired in March by the state and on July 18 filed for municipal bankruptcy.
