WE Energies told to keep Marquette power plant operational

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette’s Presque Isle power plant must stay open.

That’s the word from the company that operates the Midwest’s power grid, Midcontinent Independent System Operator.  Reuters reports MISO denied Wisconsin Energy Corporation’s February request to shut down the plant, saying it must continue operating to maintain the reliability of the U.P.’s power system.

WE Energies is now in discussions with MISO for compensation to keep the Presque Isle plant open.

The company wanted to shut down the plant after losing one of its biggest customers, Cliffs Natural Resources.  Cliffs chose to buy power from Chicago-based Integrys Energy Group for its two iron ore mines.  Cliffs officials say they’ll save millions of dollars a year by doing so.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
