Central UP groups get federal grant to further outdoor recreation sector

MARQUETTE, MI— Innovate Marquette and the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission have received a federal grant to further their outdoor recreation innovation efforts in the Central U.P.

The organizations received a $320,000 grant from the federal Economic Development Administration. It will be put toward a $400,000 project aimed at mitigating job losses due to the closure of the Presque Isle Power Plant.

The groups will embark on three projects over the next year. They include the formation of the Outdoor Recreation Innovation Action Network, a public-private industry collaborative; the development of an outdoor Recreation Industry Growth Master Plan; and the funding of an electrified trails feasibility study.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
