Education funding issues resolved in state budget

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The Michigan Senate has passed the final piece of the state budget, sending the package to Governor Rick Snyder for his signature.

The Senate Tuesday approved a budget deal for state universities, community colleges and public schools that the House passed Friday.  The rest of the $48.2 billion budget for the fiscal year starting October 1 was passed last week by both chambers.  Democrats say it doesn't do enough to make up for last year's education cuts.

Under the deal, universities would see an overall 3 percent increase.  To get a share of the $36 million universities must hold tuition increases to no more than 4 percent and meet other requirements.

Lawmakers hoped to send the entire budget to Snyder by June 1, but differences delayed completion.
