MARQUETTE, MI-- More freshmen are attending Northern Michigan University this fall than last year.
The 10th day enrollment report indicates the number of incoming freshmen pursuing bachelor’s degrees is up 22, or 2 percent. The increase is welcome, following the graduation of one of NMU’s largest classes last spring. But the total number of students is still down 219 people to 8,879.
Northern has been included in the top 100 of best Midwest regional universities, as reported by U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 edition of “Best Colleges.”
Officials note they’re strengthening their focus on student retention for the sake of long-term enrollment. Results of a program implemented last year indicate a
7.4 percent increase in retention among a control group of at-risk freshmen, who are now sophomores.
