HOUGHTON, MI (AP)-- A group of scholars, activists, community leaders and others are gathering in Houghton this week for an annual Upper Peninsula writing conference.
The fourth Writing Across the Peninsula kicks off Thursday and runs through Saturday at Michigan Technological University. This year's theme is "Revolutionary 'Riting: Working-class Perspectives and the 1913-14 Michigan Copper Strike."
Organizers say the strike's centennial offers an opportunity to consider writing as one of the most important expressions of working-class heritage. Among the topics being examined are articles in union newspapers and the treatment of working-class immigrants in so-called English classrooms.
The conference is hosted by the university's humanities department. It was first held at Michigan Tech in 2010 and has traveled to Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State universities.
