Governor's budget plan would give NMU $6.3 million more

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University President David Haynes is pleased Governor Snyder’s budget proposal includes a 6-percent funding increase for universities, but he says it’s just the first step in a long process of getting higher education back on the funding track.

NMU would get a 6.3-percent increase—or $2.6 million—under the governor’s plan.  Some of the money would be determined by performance metrics.

Northern currently gets $41.7 million from the state.

The plan requires universities to limit tuition increases to 3.2 percent or less in order to get additional performance funding.

The increase proposed Wednesday would give the schools additional state aid for the third straight year after four consecutive years of cuts.

Aid to universities currently is down one-third from just seven years ago.
