Protests planned at NMU graduation

MARQUETTE, MI--   Groups from around the state will join NMU students in protesting Governor Rick Snyder when he gives the commencement address at graduation.

Opposition to the selection of the governor as speaker led some students to plan a protest. They say the Flint water crisis shouldn’t have happened and the state has done little to remedy the situation over the past four years.

Some students and community members will stand and turn their backs on the governor during his speech. Members of the coalition Flint Rising will attend, as well members of labor groups and environmentalists from the Mackinac Straits area.

NMU’s graduation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 5.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
