Mine Safety and Health Administration grants MTU money

HOUGHTON, MI--   Michigan Technological University is getting more than $252,000 for mine safety training.

The grant money comes from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration. Tech will use the funds to provide miners with federally mandated training. It covers training of miners working at surface and underground coal, metal, and nonmetal mines.

The MSHA awarded grants based on applications from states. They’re administered by mine inspector’s offices, state departments of labor, and state-supported colleges and universities.

Each recipient tailors the program to the needs of its mines and miners – including mining conditions and hazards miners may encounter – and provides technical assistance.
