NMU to open cybersecurity training hub

MARQUETTE, MI--   Governor Rick Snyder has announced plans to establish a new cybersecurity training hub at Northern Michigan University.

The effort is part of the Michigan Cyber Range Network. Officials say the hub will accelerate talent development for the high-demand cybersecurity industry, creating jobs in the U.P. and making residents and businesses less vulnerable to attacks by hackers.

Steve VandenAvond is the program manager. He says Northern will partner with Upper Peninsula universities, community colleges, and school districts. The aim is to develop innovative competency, apprenticeship, and experience-based learning pathways at the secondary and post-secondary level.

NMU is working on the initiative with Invest UP and has begun conversations with national companies that have a high demand for professionals with aptitude in security platforms and cloud computing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
