NMU allows more credits to transfer from community colleges

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University is trying to make it easier to transfer to the Marquette school.

NMU has increased the number of credit hours students can transfer from a regionally credited community college from 64 to 90. NMU Registrar Kim Rotundo says the original credit limit was established because it represented half the credits needed for a bachelor’s degree. She says now that community colleges offer much more than just coursework for a student’s first and second year, Northern increased the limit to prevent students from losing credits they’ve already earned.

Rotundo says as long as transfer students complete a minimum of 30 credits from NMU and meet the degree requirements, they’ll graduate.

The new policy supersedes previous articulation agreements with community colleges. Rather than restrict the benefit to specific majors, the policy change enables NMU to apply it equitably to all transfer students.

The changes go into effect this coming fall.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
