NMU mourns lost student

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Northern Michigan University flag will be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, January 29, in honor of the passing of NMU student Guiancarlo “Carlo” Estupigan, who passed away sometime this past weekend from exposure to the extreme cold temperatures.

Carlo enrolled at NMU in Fall of 2017 and was pursuing a degree in fish and wildlife management. He worked in Dr. Lindsay’s biology lab and was known for his love of birds, fishing, photography and the outdoors. He was planning to participate in a research trip to Zambia this summer. According to his family, Carlo loved Northern and his professors.

NMU extends condolences to Carlo’s family, friends and classmates during this time of their great loss. Anyone in need of counseling services can contact the Dean of Students Office or the Counseling and Consultation Services at 227-2980.

Additionally, NMU officials express gratitude to all those involved with the search.

The NMU flag is lowered to half-staff and campus messages are sent after the passing of current students, faculty and staff and after consultation with immediate family.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
