Arvon Township students Read for Raptors

ARVON TOWNSHIP, MI--   An 11-student school in Baraga County has raised hundreds of dollars for the Chocolay Raptor Center.

March was Reading Month, and students at Arvon Township School decided to help out rehabilitating birds through their efforts. The Read for Raptors program entailed recruiting donors who pledged a certain amount for every page read or every minute spent reading.

The school raised more than $700 in pledges.

Teachers then took the students on a field trip to the Chocolay Raptor Center in Marquette County. The kids met Merl the merlin, Rey the kestrel, Phoenix the peregrine falcon, and Erik the red-tailed hawk. Each child then presented their donations to the birds.

Center director Jerry Maynard says he’s grateful for the donations. He says the students not only honed their reading skills, but also learned how to interact with and support one of their favorite causes.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
