Majority of survey respondents want to keep MSHS nickname

MARQUETTE, MI--   Recent survey results indicate most respondents want to keep the Marquette Senior High School “Redmen” nickname.

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education wanted to gather input on the issue. Consumer Connections of Green Bay mailed 21,241 surveys to district registered voters. Officials say 4,799 valid votes were received and 1,607 cards were returned as undeliverable due to address changes. Voting options were randomized.

The result was 59.012 percent supported keeping the current nickname and 40.988 percent supported seeking a new nickname.

The MAPS Board and administration say they are currently focused only on meeting the needs of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board will address survey results and hold a vote on the matter at a more appropriate time. It will be scheduled with adequate notice and will allow full public participation.
