NMU, female professors settle lawsuit before trial

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University has agreed to pay four female professors $1.46 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit.

Claudia Hart, Carol Steinhaus, Karin Stulz and Margaret Vroman were professors in the College of Business. They filed suit in February of last year, claiming men’s salaries in the College of Business was significantly higher than women’s across all disciplines over the past 12 years. They also claimed the male professors were given preference in choosing which classes they wanted to teach.

Trial on the matter was set to begin next month.

NMU administration says settlement of the lawsuit does not mean an admission of fault or liability by the university. Officials say salaries are set through collective bargaining agreements with the faculty union.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
