NMU to require masks in some areas of campus this fall

MARQUETTE, MI--   The spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, even among vaccinated people, has prompted Northern Michigan University officials to revise the school’s mask protocol.

President Fritz Erickson says while Marquette currently has a low number of coronavirus cases, the start of classes will bring people in from around the country. Some students will come from areas where the variant is prevalent.

In an email Wednesday Erickson said everyone—vaccinated or not—who participates in residence hall move-in activities August 19-23 is required to wear masks over their nose and mouth. Starting August 23 all vaccinated and non-vaccinated members of the campus community must mask up in classrooms and labs. And NMU will allow faculty and staff to require masks for visitors to their individual offices, regardless of vaccination status, where social distancing cannot be applied.

Erickson reminds everyone who isn’t fully vaccinated that they must wear a mask when inside any NMU facility.
