MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University is holding the first-ever Great Lakes Cannabis Education Conference next week.
The event aims to bring together experts and researchers in the fields of cannabis science, education and industry.
NMU chemistry professor and conference organizer Alex Wilson says education about cannabis needs to take place because it’s part of the national conversation.
“Aside from the medicinal benefit, it’s also… it’s just out there, right? States are legalizing both medicinal and recreational use, and if that’s going to take place, that has to take place safely.”
Wilson notes we need to know what’s going on with the science of cannabis, but the conference involves the business aspect of the plant, as well.
“You need to be prepared with knowledge to make good business decisions.”
It’s no accident the conference is being held in Marquette. Wilson says NMU is a leader in cannabis education—it’s medicinal plant chemistry program was the first in the nation—and the university now has programs in indoor agriculture and cannabis operations.
The event will feature cannabis scientist and educator, Doctor Riley Kirk; a panel discussion about research with representatives from across the state and region; and industry experts talking about the skills needed to succeed in the cannabis business. It will also include legal advice from top regulators and lawyers in the state, including Andrew Brisbo, Director of the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency.
The conference takes place Tuesday, April 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at NMU’s Northern Center. Registration closes Monday.
