Hancock District to expand School Resource Officer role

HANCOCK, MI— The Hancock School Board has approved a motion to discuss having armed officers in district buildings and properties.

The Daily Mining Gazette says the board met in special session Friday, three days after a gunman killed 21 people at an elementary school in Texas.

Hancock Superintendent Steve Patchin says the district has been developing the School Resource Officer program since last year. The SRO is a sworn officer from a local law enforcement agency who helps keep schools safe and prevents crime. Patchin says the district already has a part-time SRO from the Hancock Police Department. The district will now begin to discuss what the SRO position should look like and how it will be expanded.

A Remote Police Office was created in the middle school last year. Officials also hired a social worker for the elementary school.
