LANSING, MI (MPRN)— Scores of educators protested outside the Michigan Capitol Tuesday evening, calling for an end to gun violence in schools.
Among them was a teacher who confronted a leading Republican state lawmaker.
Shari Apol teaches art at Lansing public schools. She caught sight of Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey as he walked by protesters into the Capitol building. So Apol trailed the Clarklake Republican urging him to support pending gun control bills listed on her sign.
“So that no more parents have to have a DNA swab to recognize which child of theirs is deceased from gun violence.”
State Democrats are proposing mandatory background checks for all types of gun purchases and setting criminal penalties for failing to safely store firearms away from minors.
But Michigan Republicans have blocked those proposals in the wake of school shootings in Oxford, Michigan and Uvalde, Texas, while agreeing to beef up spending on school security.
