Social media blamed for cancelation of classes, activities in Manistique Area Schools

MANISTIQUE, MI— Classes and activities were canceled at Manistique Public Schools last week after social media caused safety concerns.

Manistique Public Safety officers were made aware Thursday of a social media profile that was possibly linked to the Middle and High School. That led to an investigation using both local and federal resources. Police and school administrators made the decision to cancel activities Thursday and classes on Friday out of caution.

Officers say investigation proved that at no time was there any threat to staff or students in the district. They say the concern stemmed from the negligent use of technology and social media venues.

School administrators are asking parents to use the incident as an opportunity for growth, as kids today are faced with choices that once didn’t exist. They say the misuse of technology can have long-term repercussions on the lives of children.
