More than 2 thousand nickname suggestions submitted for MSHS

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette Area Public Schools Board has a list of 2,200 possible nicknames to whittle down for Marquette Senior High School.

Board President Kristen Cambensy says about 2,000 were submitted through an online survey and around 200 came through email, snail mail, and phone.

She says the board is hoping to develop a method of narrowing down the list in the next few weeks.

“Weed out the ones that didn’t originally fit our criteria and just try to come up with a more condensed list. And then we’re hoping to bring it to the student body to have them kind of work through and give us some help in narrowing down all of the suggestions.”

The MAPS board would like to have students weigh in before the holiday break then officials will take it up again in the new year.

Cambensy says she’s thankful for the amount of input received and is looking forward to finding a name the student body and community can rally behind.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
