Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to ask lawmakers to make community college free for all high school graduates

LANSING, MI (AP)— Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is planning to urge lawmakers to pass legislation that would provide free community college tuition for all high school graduates.

Whitmer established the Michigan Reconnect program in 2021 to increase the percentage of the state’s workforce who have earned a postsecondary degree or training from 50.5 percent to 60 percent by 2030.

Participants currently must be at least 21 years old to qualify for free community college. That age minimum is set to increase to 25 years in the fall. As of August, 27,000 residents had enrolled in the program since its launch.

Whitmer will make the request during her State of the State address Wednesday night. It will air at 7 p.m. Eastern on Public Radio 90 and on www.wnmufm.org.
