Trademark attorney fighting MSHS name change

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette Senior High School alumna and trademark attorney is trying to stop the school’s mascot from changing from Redmen to Sentinels.

Margaret Brumm filed paperwork for property rights to the final three nicknames “Red Jackets,” “Reds,” and “Sentinels,” and ordered T-shirts with those names to indicate her trademark was in use.

Brumm says the public wasn’t treated fairly when it came to moving ahead with the name change.

MAPS School Board President Kristen Cambensy says the public submitted 2,000 nickname ideas. They were narrowed to 350, then given to 35 advisors.

“Each advisory had ten different names and we asked them to do the pros and cons of each name, and then provide what they thought their favorite in that group was.”

Brumm says changing the nickname will be too expensive, and she wants an election within the MAPS district to see if residents are really for the change.

Cambensy declined to comment on Brumm’s actions.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
