NMU Board approves project funding, Tessman raise

MARQUETTE, MI— The NMU Board of Trustees has authorized work to move forward on the Harden Hall renovation and Science Complex Research and Teaching Labs addition, based on final bids.

Over the past two years, the board approved funding requests for various phases of the renovation. They totaled about $33 million, but the final project bid came in at nearly $40 million.

The university sent select bid packages out with revised scopes in December. The price was reduced to $37 million. The board approved the additional $4.3 million to cover the difference for the Harden Hall renovation and $14.1 million for remaining construction costs associated with the addition to the Science Complex.

On Friday, the board also approved a 2-percent increase to President Brock Tessman’s base salary based on his performance over his first year at NMU. He will receive the same increase that NMU non-represented employees received in July 2023, retroactive to that date.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
