FAFSA submissions at NMU up over last year

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University is seeing hundreds more submissions of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid over last year, despite federal delays in FAFSA processing.

Nationally, student FAFSA completion rates are down 40 percent from the previous year. As of Sunday, more than 3,200 admitted students submitted a FAFSA to NMU. That’s almost 300 over last year.

Northern’s Global Campus is also collaborating with state agendas, notably the Michigan Center for Adult Learning. Officials are looking to expand the Credit for Prior Learning—or CPL. It would provide credit for past life or work experience.

A national study indicates nearly half of potential students have sought CPL credits for past life or work experiences, with a similar proportion intending to do so in the future.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
