Manistique team wins construction challenge after teacher passes away

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI— Six Manistique construction trades students honored their teacher on Friday by coming in first place in the Upper Peninsula Construction Skills Challenge.

They were part of several high school teams competing in the 2024 Construction and Welding Skills Challenge held in Negaunee Township.

Last Monday, Manistique Area Schools Superintendent Kristina Hansen notified families and residents that Delta-Schoolcraft ISD Career and Technical Education Building Trades teacher Kevin Brown was found deceased in his home. He was lauded as a dedicated and exceptional teacher, not only in the classroom, but with Habitat for Humanity, as well.

Habitat for Humanity HiawathaLand posted the following on Facebook:

“We are saddened to share that we have lost our friend and colleague, Kevin Brown. His presence was apparent in every corner of our organization with the warmth, dedication, and wisdom he shared. As a former board member, Board President, and member of our Construction Committee, Kevin played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of our endeavors, and guiding us with his vision and commitment. His role as our Construction Supervisor for several years, exemplified not only his expertise but also his hands-on approach and willingness to go above and beyond for the betterment of our projects, our organization, and our community. He had a special skill for leading and teaching our volunteer groups. As the Building Trades CTE Instructor, he continued his partnership with HfH HiawathaLand with his students, working on rehab houses and on projects in the Blanchard Center. Beyond titles and roles, Kevin was a cherished friend whose kindness, generosity, and enthusiasm touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may have left this world too soon, his legacy of leadership, passion, and camaraderie will continue to inspire us, guiding our steps as we honor his memory.”

A memorial for Brown was held Saturday in Manistique.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
