MI universities awarded grants to boost behavioral health social work master's degrees

LANSING, MI— The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has given $5 million to 12 state universities to encourage social work in behavioral health.

The money will provide $30,000 stipends to students seeking to obtain a master’s degree in social work and who commit to working in behavioral health in the state upon graduation.

In the Upper Peninsula, Northern Michigan University received $90,578.

Award amounts were calculated based on average number of students in the advanced standing MSW program, average student loan debt, and demographic diversity.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
