UP schools cancel classes after potential threats made

Nicole Walton

EBEN JUNCTION AND CRYSTAL FALLS, MI— Two Upper Peninsula schools are closed Friday due to potential threats of violence.

Bill Valima is superintendent of the Superior Central School District. He posted on Facebook that law enforcement and school officials were made aware of a potential threat Thursday. Police are investigating the situation.

Valima said out of an abundance of caution—and to allow officers time to investigate—he canceled Friday’s classes.

Also on Facebook, officials with Forest Park Schools posted the district will be closed until further notice. Another potential threat of violence was apparently made against students there. Law enforcement is investigating that case, as well.

Public Radio 90 will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
