Sonderegger Symposium to talk about 125 years of Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, MI— NMU’s 24th Sonderegger Symposium will celebrate the university’s 125th anniversary on Friday.

Sponsored by a donation from the Sonderegger family, the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, and the Center for U.P. Studies, the symposium will touch on various aspects of Northern’s past.

The keynote speaker will be 1956 Northern graduate, noted administrator and educator L. Sandy MacLean, who received the Distinguished Alumni award from Northern in 1986.

Topics will include Glimmers and Reflections: Recalling nearly thirty years of NMU’s Center for Native American Studies, Early Female Faculty and their influence on Northern, and African-Americans at Northern.

The Sonderegger Symposium takes place Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Northern Center. It’s free and open to the public, and there’s no need to register.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
