Woman charged in Marquette child abuse case employed at MAPS elementary school

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette Area Public Schools officials say they’re cooperating with law enforcement after an employee was recently charged in an investigation.

Dr. Colin Irish and his wife Carrie were arrested last month for child abuse after police discovered they locked their special-needs son in a closet, among other allegations. Carrie’s mother and her sister, Michelle Maxson, apparently lived in the home, as well.

Maxson was charged this week in connection with the child abuse case. The website for Graveraet Elementary School lists Maxson as a special education aide.

On Wednesday, MAPS released the following statement:

The Marquette Area Public Schools has been made aware that a district employee was recently charged in connection with an ongoing law enforcement investigation. Although the criminal allegations are unrelated to conduct in our schools, we take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities.

While we cannot share further details at this time, we want our community to know that the safety and wellbeing of our students remains our top priority. The district follows strict protocols to ensure a safe learning environment and always takes immediate action in accordance with district policies and legal requirements.

Our focus at this time is on supporting our students, staff, and families. Any inquiries related to the investigation should be directed to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Public Radio 90 will bring you more details as they become available.
